The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially named former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The announcement pairs Amaechi with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in what the party has described as a “unity and rescue ticket” aimed at offering Nigerians an alternative leadership option ahead of the next presidential election.
In a statement released on Monday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said Amaechi’s selection followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and stakeholders from across the country's geopolitical zones.
According to the party, the decision was influenced by Amaechi’s performance in the ADC presidential primaries, where he emerged as the runner-up, as well as his extensive record of public service at both state and federal levels.
The party highlighted Amaechi’s experience as a former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor, and Minister of Transportation, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most experienced political figures.
ADC leaders stated that his background in governance, public administration, and legislative affairs would complement Atiku’s experience and strengthen the party’s appeal across the country.
The party further argued that the combination of Atiku and Amaechi brings together two politicians with broad national recognition, administrative experience, and the capacity to address Nigeria’s pressing economic and security challenges.
According to the statement, Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and his ability to build political alliances across regional and ethnic divides make him a strategic choice for the ticket.
The ADC also maintained that the partnership reflects its commitment to national unity, inclusive governance, economic recovery, job creation, and improved security.
Party officials expressed confidence that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket would energize supporters, strengthen its growing coalition, and present voters with a credible alternative in the 2027 presidential contest.
The party subsequently called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organizations, youth groups, women leaders, and Nigerians across the country to support the ticket as preparations begin for the next election cycle.
With the announcement, attention is expected to shift to how other major political parties position themselves ahead of what is already shaping up to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential election.
