Former Bayelsa State Governor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader, Seriake Dickson, has explained why activist Aisha Yesufu did not emerge as one of the party's candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dickson stated that the activist was offered an opportunity to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives but declined the proposal because she preferred to seek a Senate position.
The former governor made the disclosure while responding to concerns and criticisms surrounding the party's candidate selection process.
According to him, both the NDC leadership and the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, made efforts to support Yesufu's political aspirations by creating a pathway for her to participate in elective politics.
Dickson maintained that the party did not exclude or sideline the activist, insisting that she was presented with a viable opportunity to contest for public office.
Speaking on the matter, he said a House of Representatives seat was considered an appropriate starting point for her legislative journey and would have provided a platform to contribute to policymaking and governance.
However, he claimed that Yesufu rejected the offer because she was interested in contesting for a Senate seat instead.
The comments come amid growing disagreements between the activist and some leaders of the party over issues relating to the conduct of the party's primaries and internal affairs.
The dispute has fueled public debate among party supporters and political observers, with differing opinions emerging on the handling of the nomination process.
While Dickson insists that the party acted fairly by offering Yesufu an opportunity to contest, the controversy highlights ongoing tensions within the political movement as preparations continue for the 2027 elections.
As of the time of filing this report, Yesufu had not publicly responded to Dickson's latest remarks.
