England's Lack of Creativity Against Ghana Sparks Palmer Debate

Why Tuchel Was Right to Leave Palmer and Foden Out Despite England's Frustrating Draw With Ghana

England's disappointing 0-0 draw against Ghana has sparked fresh criticism of head coach Thomas Tuchel, with many questioning his decision to omit creative stars Cole Palmer and Phil Foden from the squad.

After a frustrating evening in which the Three Lions dominated possession but failed to find a breakthrough, calls quickly emerged for the return of players capable of producing moments of individual brilliance.

However, judging Tuchel's squad selection based on a single result may be premature.

England controlled almost every aspect of the contest, enjoying around 80 percent possession, completing nearly 600 passes and registering 19 shots. Despite those numbers, only three efforts tested the Ghana goalkeeper as the visitors defended deep throughout the match.

Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz admitted after the game that frustrating England was the primary objective.

"I am so proud of the way our players fought during the game and how much they stood behind the plan," Queiroz said.

"When you have to defend, you defend. I cannot play samba when they play rock and roll."

His side employed a disciplined low defensive block, keeping virtually every player behind the ball and denying England any meaningful space in central areas.

As a result, England's attacking midfielders Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice struggled to operate between the lines, while wingers Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke were frequently double-marked whenever they received possession.

England's first genuine opportunity from open play arrived only after 36 minutes, and it was not until the closing stages that they came close to scoring when Nico O'Reilly struck the crossbar before Harry Kane fired the rebound over the bar.

Tuchel's Tactical Vision

Tuchel has made it clear that his team selection is based on tactical balance and current form rather than reputation.

The German coach has built his squad around a structured 4-2-3-1 system, relying on disciplined movement, wide wingers, dynamic full-backs and an established attacking midfielder.

Within that framework, Jude Bellingham remains the preferred No. 10, while players such as Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze provide additional creative options.

Although Palmer and Foden possess exceptional talent, neither naturally fits the specific wide attacking roles Tuchel currently demands.

The England manager has also insisted that club form should influence international selection.

Both Palmer and Foden endured inconsistent seasons at club level, making their omission understandable despite their undeniable quality.

Patience May Be Required

Criticism of Tuchel intensified following the stalemate with Ghana, but the performance also demonstrated the difficulty of breaking down an opponent that showed little interest in attacking.

Earlier in the international window, England's 4-2 victory over Croatia highlighted the attacking potential of Tuchel's tactical approach when faced with a more open game.

With greater space available, England created numerous chances, moved the ball with speed and looked significantly more dangerous.

The contrast between the two matches suggests that England's struggles against Ghana were influenced as much by the opponent's defensive strategy as by any shortcomings in Tuchel's system.

While supporters will continue to debate the absence of Palmer and Foden, the England manager appears committed to building a system-first approach. Whether that philosophy delivers success on the biggest stage remains to be seen, but one frustrating draw may be too early to dismiss his long-term vision.

Tuchel should apply some tactics in the midfield. I really wish Cole Palmer was in this squad.

Best of luck guys!!!
