The family of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has disclosed that he died from a snakebite while being held captive by bandits, contradicting earlier reports that attributed his death to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
According to family members who spoke with media outlets, the former military officer's death was not related to any pre-existing health condition as previously reported.
The clarification comes amid continued concern over the circumstances surrounding the death of the retired general, who was abducted alongside his wife while travelling.
Family sources explained that the fatal incident occurred during their period in captivity, where General Abubakar reportedly suffered a snakebite that ultimately led to his death.
The family also addressed reports concerning the status of his wife, revealing that she remains in the custody of the abductors.
They dismissed claims suggesting she had regained her freedom and expressed deep concern over her continued detention.
Relatives of the deceased appealed to relevant authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts aimed at securing her safe release.
The death of the retired military officer has further highlighted growing concerns about insecurity and kidnapping activities in parts of the country.
Reacting to the incident earlier, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the actions of the criminals and reiterated the government's commitment to combating insecurity.
In a statement issued by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the late general as a distinguished military officer who dedicated many years of service to the nation before retiring.
The President noted that General Abubakar was travelling to his hometown when he and his wife were intercepted and abducted by armed criminals.
Tinubu also extended his condolences to the bereaved family, the government of Katsina State, and members of the armed forces.
He expressed particular concern for the general's wife, who remains in captivity, and assured Nigerians that efforts to tackle criminal activities across the country would continue.
The tragic development has renewed calls for stronger security measures and more decisive action against kidnapping and banditry, which remain major challenges in several parts of Nigeria.
