Veteran Nollywood actor and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has responded to reports that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is seeking ₦5 billion in damages over alleged defamatory remarks.
In a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, Okonkwo dismissed the reported legal demand and questioned the motive behind the move.
According to the former spokesperson for Obi's presidential campaign, he became aware of a letter allegedly issued by Obi's legal representatives demanding ₦5 billion in compensation.
Reacting to the development, Okonkwo mocked the reported demand, suggesting that if Obi required financial support for political activities, he should approach him directly rather than pursue what he described as an attempt to extract money through legal means.
He further claimed that during his time as a spokesperson for Obi's campaign, he personally covered some of his expenses, including travel and accommodation costs associated with campaign activities.
Okonkwo stated that he willingly contributed to the campaign at the time and would have no problem assisting if financial support was genuinely needed.
The actor-turned-politician also disclosed that he had not yet examined the alleged demand letter in detail but indicated that he would review its contents before issuing a formal response.
He warned that should the matter proceed to court, he may be compelled to reveal information acquired during his period of service within Obi's political camp.
According to him, he had deliberately refrained from discussing certain internal matters out of respect for confidentiality and personal principles.
However, he suggested that legal proceedings could alter that position if he is required to defend himself against any allegations.
Okonkwo maintained that he is prepared to respond through the appropriate legal channels once he has fully reviewed the contents of the letter.
The latest exchange adds another chapter to the growing public disagreement between the former campaign allies, whose relationship has deteriorated since the conclusion of the 2023 presidential election.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official response from Obi or his legal team regarding Okonkwo's latest remarks.
