Kwankwaso Reportedly Threatens Exit as NDC Revises Kano Candidate List

Tensions have reportedly emerged within the NDC after the party revised candidate lists in Kano State to enforce a 60-40 power-sharing agreement involving the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is reportedly considering his future in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a dispute over the party's candidate selection process in Kano State.

The development comes after the party replaced several candidates earlier nominated by the Kwankwasiyya movement, citing the need to implement an agreed power-sharing arrangement between the faction and the party's existing structure.

According to a report by Daily Post, the changes were outlined in a document signed by the Kano State Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga.

Mairiga explained that the adjustments were made to ensure compliance with a previously agreed formula for distributing party positions and elective tickets between the Kwankwasiyya bloc and the party's established leadership in the state.

The document was reportedly copied to the party's national leadership, including Senator Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman.

Under the revised arrangement, the party approved a new list of candidates for several federal constituencies. Those listed include Barrister Isma'il Idris Sani for Kumbotso, Nasiru Ali Ahmed for Nassarawa, Kabiru Ishaq Sa'id for Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale.

The party also reviewed nominations for several Kano State House of Assembly constituencies, including Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu.

According to party officials, the changes were necessary to uphold a standing agreement under which elective positions and party offices would be shared on a 60-40 basis, with the Kwankwasiyya faction allocated 60 per cent and the original NDC structure retaining 40 per cent.

The dispute has generated fresh concerns about internal cohesion within the opposition party as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.

The reported disagreement comes amid broader political realignments ahead of the next election cycle, with major opposition figures seeking strategic alliances to strengthen their electoral prospects.

Political observers believe the outcome of the current dispute could influence the party's unity and organizational strength in Kano State, one of Nigeria's most politically significant states.

Neither Kwankwaso nor his representatives had publicly issued a detailed response to the reported candidate substitutions at the time of filing this report.
