The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the successful rescue of Mrs. Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was kidnapped by bandits alongside her husband several weeks ago.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that the operation was carried out by troops of the Nigerian Army with support from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
According to the military, the rescue followed sustained search-and-rescue efforts by troops operating under Operation FASAN YAMMA, which has been actively targeting criminal groups in affected communities.
Uba explained that security forces tracked the kidnappers to Tunga Village, where they engaged the armed group in a fierce gun battle.
During the confrontation, the bandits reportedly came under intense pressure from advancing troops and were forced to retreat from the area.
The DHQ stated that before fleeing, the kidnappers shot Mrs. Abubakar and abandoned her at the scene.
She was subsequently recovered by the troops and immediately evacuated for medical treatment.
Military authorities confirmed that the rescued victim is currently receiving care at a military medical facility and is responding positively to treatment.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria assured the public that every necessary measure is being taken to support her recovery and provide assistance to her family following the traumatic ordeal.
“The rescue operation followed intensified search-and-rescue efforts conducted by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA. During sustained offensive operations, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar,” the statement noted.
The military also reiterated its commitment to pursuing those responsible for the abduction and other acts of terrorism and banditry across the country.
According to the DHQ, troops will continue offensive operations aimed at tracking down and neutralizing criminal elements while strengthening security in vulnerable communities.
The rescue comes few days after the tragic death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in captivity, an incident that sparked nationwide concern and renewed calls for stronger action against insecurity.
Security officials have pledged to sustain ongoing operations not only in Katsina State but across other parts of the country affected by banditry and terrorism.
