Chief Dr. Obinna Ebirim, who recently emerged victorious in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Representatives primary election in Imo State, has reflected on the sacrifices, pressures, and personal challenges associated with seeking public office in Nigeria.
In a statement released after the conclusion of the party's primary election, Ebirim described the electoral process as a demanding experience that extends far beyond the financial costs often associated with politics.
According to him, his decision to participate in the political process was motivated by a desire to contribute to national development and help address the challenges confronting many Nigerian communities.
Ebirim noted that the past two weeks of political engagement exposed him to intense emotional, physical, and mental demands, including uncertainty, disappointment, sleepless nights, logistical difficulties, and various forms of pressure.
He recounted undertaking an urgent trip from Abuja to Port Harcourt before travelling overnight to Owerri under challenging security conditions due to last-minute changes in the political timetable. The journey, he said, required careful planning and personal sacrifice amid concerns about insecurity along major routes.
Despite the difficulties, Ebirim said the support and confidence shown by party members and constituents provided him with the motivation to continue pursuing his political aspirations.
He particularly commended local party leaders and supporters who, according to him, remained committed to defending the integrity of the electoral process despite facing significant pressure and inducements.
The NDC candidate stated that the experience gave him a deeper appreciation of the challenges elected officials face, arguing that public office holders often endure pressures that are not visible to the wider public.
According to him, navigating such circumstances requires strong personal values, discipline, and a genuine commitment to public service.
Ebirim expressed gratitude to his family, friends, supporters, and political associates who stood by him throughout the process, describing his political journey as a mission guided by faith and purpose.
He also reaffirmed his belief in the possibility of national renewal through visionary leadership and effective representation, while pledging to continue working toward the advancement of his constituents and the broader Nigerian society.
The medical doctor and politician concluded by thanking the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for providing a platform for aspiring leaders to participate in the democratic process and contribute to nation-building.
