Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was reportedly taken to hospital after collapsing during a Democracy Day protest at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
The incident occurred on Friday as protesters gathered to express concerns over rising insecurity, economic hardship, and what they described as poor governance across the country.
According to reports, the protest attracted civil society organizations, activists, and concerned citizens who assembled to demand urgent government action on pressing national issues.
Witnesses said the demonstration turned chaotic after security operatives allegedly deployed teargas canisters in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
The action reportedly triggered panic among participants, who scrambled for safety as thick fumes spread across the protest venue.
Sources at the scene claimed that Sowore was affected by the teargas and subsequently lost consciousness during the confusion that followed.
Supporters and fellow activists immediately rushed to assist him before evacuating him from the area. According to individuals close to the activist, he regained consciousness while being transported away from the protest ground.
He was later taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. The incident further heightened tensions at the venue, with protesters criticizing the security response and insisting that the gathering was peaceful.
Demonstrators maintained that the protest was aimed at drawing attention to worsening security concerns, the rising cost of living, and other governance-related challenges affecting Nigerians.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the police regarding the incident, while concerns continued to grow over the circumstances that led to the disruption of the protest.
