Makinde Government Declares June 16 Work-Free Day for Hijrah

The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day in observance of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision reflects the government's recognition of the significance of the Hijrah to the Muslim faithful.

According to the commissioner, the Islamic New Year commemorates the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event widely regarded as a defining moment in Islamic history.

Oyelade noted that the state government considers the occasion an important period of reflection and spiritual renewal for Muslims and therefore approved the work-free day as a mark of respect and solidarity with the Islamic community.

He encouraged residents across the state to make use of the holiday to offer prayers for lasting peace, unity, and continued development in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

The commissioner further urged citizens to reflect on the values and lessons associated with the Hijrah, including sacrifice, perseverance, faith, and peaceful coexistence.

He emphasized the need for residents, regardless of religious or ethnic background, to embrace the spirit of harmony and brotherhood that the Islamic New Year represents.

According to him, the occasion provides an opportunity for individuals and communities to renew their commitment to mutual understanding, tolerance, and collective progress.

Oyelade expressed hope that the observance would strengthen social cohesion and inspire citizens to work together toward the advancement of the state.

“The Hijrah is a period of reflection, prayer, and community service. It is a time for all of us to come together in the interest of peace, unity, and prosperity,” he stated.

The Oyo State Government also wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and rewarding Hijrah celebration while reiterating its commitment to promoting religious harmony and inclusive governance across the state.
