Sowore Loses Bail After Missing Court Hearing in Abuja

The Federal High Court in Abuja has revoked the bail previously granted to activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following his failure to appear for the continuation of his trial.

Justice Mohammed Umar issued the ruling on Tuesday after the defendant was absent from court during the scheduled proceedings.

At the hearing, prosecution counsel, Kehinde Akinlolu, informed the court that Sowore did not appear despite being aware of the date fixed for the case.

The prosecution argued that the defendant's absence amounted to a violation of the conditions attached to his bail and urged the court to withdraw the privilege.

Akinlolu further accused Sowore of repeatedly engaging in actions aimed at delaying the progress of the trial.

In considering the application, Justice Umar noted that the defendant had submitted a letter requesting that the matter be adjourned.

However, the judge observed that the correspondence failed to provide any reason or justification for the request.

According to the court, an adjournment application without a clear explanation could not serve as sufficient grounds for a defendant's failure to attend proceedings.

Based on that finding, Justice Umar ruled that Sowore had not presented a valid excuse for his absence and consequently revoked his bail.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter until June 22 for further hearing.

The decision means Sowore is expected to appear before the court when proceedings resume as the trial continues.

The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) has been standing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations brought against him by the prosecution.

The latest development adds a new twist to the ongoing legal proceedings and is expected to generate reactions from his supporters and legal representatives ahead of the next court date.
