Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on Monday formally took custody of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The correctional officers arrived at the court premises in a prison transport vehicle, commonly referred to as a Black Maria, and received Sowore from operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) before conveying him to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Sowore was brought out by DSS personnel at about 2:10 p.m. from a secured section within the court complex and escorted to the waiting vehicle.
Despite the circumstances, the activist appeared composed and energetic as he interacted briefly with supporters who had gathered at the court premises.
Addressing the crowd, Sowore urged his followers to remain steadfast in their pursuit of a better society and continue advocating for good governance and accountability.
He also informed supporters that he would return to court on Wednesday for the continuation of his trial.
During the brief exchange, Sowore questioned the decision to transport him in a prison van, arguing that public officials accused of looting public resources are often moved in more comfortable vehicles.
According to him, he would have preferred being conveyed in a Hilux vehicle rather than a correctional service transport van.
The activist used the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to the causes he has championed over the years, including transparency, accountability, and social justice.
Sowore maintained that he would not abandon his advocacy efforts despite the legal challenges he is currently facing.
He insisted that future generations deserve a country where leaders are held accountable for their actions and public resources are managed responsibly.
Supporters at the court premises responded with chants and words of encouragement as he was escorted into the correctional service vehicle.
The development followed ongoing legal proceedings involving the former presidential candidate, whose case continues to attract public attention and reactions from civil society groups and political observers.
Security was visibly heightened around the court complex throughout the proceedings, with personnel from multiple agencies deployed to maintain order.
Sowore has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria's civic and political space, known for his activism, media work, and participation in electoral politics.
The matter has been adjourned, with the activist expected to reappear before the court for further proceedings as the trial continues.
