Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is recovering well after collapsing during an international match. Team doctors say he is in good spirits and expected to return home soon.
Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen is recovering well after suffering a medical emergency during Denmark's international fixture against Sweden on Sunday.
The 34-year-old former Manchester United star, who has played with an implanted heart device since collapsing during Euro 2020, suddenly fell to the ground in the 64th minute of the match in Odense.
Medical personnel immediately rushed onto the field as players from both teams formed a protective circle around Eriksen to shield him from cameras and spectators.
The match was subsequently abandoned, and Eriksen was escorted off the pitch before being taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
Providing an update after the incident, Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen revealed that Eriksen had briefly lost consciousness but that the implanted cardiac device functioned as intended.
Speaking on Monday, Boesen said the midfielder's condition had improved significantly. "I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well," Boesen said.
"He is with his family, remains in good spirits, and the expectation is that he will be discharged soon and return home."
The doctor added that the medical team has maintained close communication with Denmark's players and staff following the frightening incident.
Eriksen has worn the heart device since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening match against Finland at the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, which was held in 2021.
The incident forced him to spend more than six months away from football before making a remarkable return to the sport.
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg described the moment as deeply concerning.
"There was a throw-in, and I was walking towards the sideline when I turned and saw Christian collapse,"
Hojbjerg told Danish broadcaster TV2. "We all understand the seriousness of such a situation, and the response from everyone involved was immediate and respectful."
Denmark head coach Brian Riemer admitted the incident had left players, staff, and opponents shaken.
"It was an extremely shocking experience for everyone," he said.
Riemer, who previously worked with Eriksen at Brentford F.C., added that the midfielder holds a special place among the players he has coached.
Following his recovery from the 2021 cardiac arrest, Eriksen resumed his professional career with Brentford before joining Manchester United, where he won both the FA Cup and League Cup.
The midfielder currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany and remains under contract with the Bundesliga side.
He also successfully returned to international football, representing Denmark at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany.
Former Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner described the latest incident as distressing but expressed relief that Eriksen was conscious and able to leave the field on his own.
"The most important thing is that he was able to walk off the pitch himself, which gives hope that he is doing well under the circumstances," Bendtner said.
"These are difficult images to witness, and for those close to Christian, it is especially painful. But everyone is relieved that he is receiving the care he needs."
