Mr Ibu's Family Appeals for Help, Says Children Have Dropped Out of School
The family of late Nollywood actor and comedian, John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has appealed to Nigerians for support, saying they have been facing severe financial hardship since his passing.
The appeal was made during a recent visit by content creator King Mitchy, where members of the family opened up about the challenges they have endured over the past two years.
According to the family, Mr Ibu's only daughter and two sons have been forced to drop out of school because of unpaid school fees.
The children's mother also disclosed that the family has been living without electricity and running water for weeks due to their inability to pay outstanding bills and house rent.
"We fetch water from the well because I have not paid the house rent. They have even cut my light for two months now. No light since. We have been like that every night. We go to look for where to charge our phones, and it's not easy," she said.
Mr Ibu's daughter expressed gratitude to her mother for doing everything possible to care for the family despite the difficult circumstances. She appealed to Nigerians and members of the entertainment industry who worked with her late father to come to their aid.
"I want to thank God for my mom. She has tried everything she could to feed us, pay our school fees, and make us happy.
"So Nigerians, if you were in the industry with my dad, you're seeing us now, come and meet us," she pleaded.
The children's mother further revealed that the school recently contacted her over the outstanding tuition fees, raising concerns that the children may remain out of school if the fees are not settled.
Mr Ibu battled a prolonged illness before undergoing the amputation of one of his legs in November 2023 following multiple surgeries.
The veteran actor died on March 2, 2024, in Lagos at the age of 62 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Widely regarded as one of Nollywood's most beloved comedians, Mr Ibu entertained millions of fans across Africa with his unique comic style and memorable performances. His family's appeal has sparked renewed calls for support from colleagues, fans, and well-meaning Nigerians to help them overcome their current financial challenges.
