Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has explained the reason behind her long-standing reputation for portraying strict, troublesome, and often villainous characters in Nigerian movies.
The award-winning actress disclosed that her decision to take on such roles was never about glorifying negative behaviour but rather about drawing public attention to social issues that exist within families and communities.
Speaking in a video shared on her Instagram page, the actress, fondly known as Mama G, said many of the situations depicted in films are reflections of realities that occur in everyday life but are rarely discussed openly.
According to her, she deliberately embraced challenging roles because they provided an opportunity to spotlight societal problems and encourage people to confront them instead of pretending they do not exist.
Ozokwor explained that her performances were intended to serve as a mirror to society, helping viewers recognize harmful behaviours and understand their consequences.
The actress noted that many of the characters she portrayed represented issues such as family conflicts, greed, manipulation, and other social vices that affect communities across the country.
She said she considered it part of her responsibility as an entertainer to use storytelling as a tool for education and awareness.
Reflecting on her decades-long career, the Nollywood icon expressed pride in the impact her work has had on audiences and the entertainment industry.
She also thanked her loyal fans, popularly known as "Mama G lovers," for their unwavering support throughout the years.
“I felt bold enough to expose the wrongs in society. These things happen, but many people prefer not to talk about them. I chose to bring them to light through my roles,” she said.
Despite frequently being cast as a strict mother-in-law, wicked stepmother, or antagonist, Ozokwor remains one of the most respected and beloved figures in Nollywood, with many fans praising her ability to bring complex characters to life.
Her performances have earned her widespread recognition and helped establish her as one of the most iconic actresses in the history of Nigeria's film industry.
