Paris Saint-Germain were crowned UEFA Champions League champions after defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Puskás Arena in Budapest on May 30.
Arsenal made a dream start to the final, taking the lead just six minutes into the contest. Kai Havertz finished confidently after being set up by Leandro Trossard, giving the Gunners an early advantage and forcing PSG onto the front foot.
The French champions responded with greater urgency after the break and eventually found a way back into the match. Their equaliser came in the 65th minute when Ousmane Dembélé converted from the penalty spot after a VAR review resulted in a spot-kick being awarded two minutes earlier.
With the scores level at 1-1, both sides pushed for a winner during the remainder of normal time and throughout extra time. Arsenal introduced Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli and Eberechi Eze in search of a breakthrough, while PSG turned to Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Gonçalo Ramos as the battle intensified.
Despite several opportunities, neither side could find the decisive goal, sending the final to a penalty shootout.
PSG made the stronger start from the spot as Gonçalo Ramos and Désiré Doué converted their efforts. Arsenal remained in contention through Viktor Gyökeres, but Eberechi Eze's missed penalty handed the advantage back to the French side.
Although Nuno Mendes failed to extend PSG’s lead and Declan Rice successfully converted for Arsenal to level matters, Achraf Hakimi and Lucas Beraldo both scored crucial penalties to keep PSG ahead.
With PSG leading 4-3, Gabriel Magalhães stepped up needing to score to keep Arsenal’s hopes alive. However, the defender was unable to convert, handing PSG victory and securing European football’s most prestigious club trophy.
The triumph marked another historic milestone for Paris Saint-Germain, who successfully retained the Champions League title after lifting the trophy the previous season with a commanding victory over Inter Milan in the 2025 final.
The latest success further cements PSG’s place among Europe’s elite clubs and highlights the continued progress of Luis Enrique’s side on the continental stage.
